I have partnered with Uganda Prison Services through Product of Prison (POP) and BPU to offer free choreographic rehabilitation dance sessions for inmates in Ugandan prisons. This initiative follows extensive research and personal encounters with various communities, many of whom have shared their raw, often untold experiences of life behind bars.
The goal of these sessions isn’t to create professional dancers or polished choreographic works, but rather to provide a platform for the inmates to express themselves. Through movement, they are able to convey the emotions and stories that often remain unspoken—their sentiments about life in prison, their struggles, and their hopes.
Regardless of why they were incarcerated, there is a deep need to support their healing process. These sessions aim to help them come to terms with their realities while beginning to heal from the pain that comes with imprisonment. The response has been overwhelming, with hundreds of inmates actively participating. The entire prison space has come alive with energy, as more and more individuals are drawn to the joy of expression and performance.
